History

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1937 within the Istanbul Technical School to meet the country’s need for mechanical engineers, and it awarded its first degree in 1941 upon completion of a four-year undergraduate program. Specialized track education in the Department of Mechanical Engineering was first implemented in our country and at our university in 1973. Since then, mechanical engineers have been successfully trained to specialize in specific areas of mechanical engineering by taking elective courses to gain more in-depth knowledge. In 1992, an evening program was launched in addition to the full-time program. The Department of Mechanical Engineering consists of seven sub-departments: Hydromechanics and Hydraulic Machinery, Structural Engineering, Machine Theory, System Dynamics and Control, Materials Science and Manufacturing Technology, Mechanics Division, Automotive Division, and Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer Division.
